Araucaria bidwillii - Bunya pine
Common name: Bunya pine
Family: Araucariaceae (Araucaria)
Distribution: Queensland
Life form: Evergreen tree
Comments: A large conifer occurring only in the Bunya Mountains near Kingaroy, south-eastern Queensland; the head of the Brisbane River and two localities in far northern Queensland. Mature trees produce, irregularly, cones weighing up to 5 kg, each containing many starchy seeds. Aboriginal tribes travelled long distances to collect and eat the tasty, highly nutritious seeds, either raw or roasted.
