Distributed along the east coast from near Mackay, Queensland, to eastern Victoria, with a solitary record from Northern Territory. Occurs along stream banks in rainforest and open forest and adjacent slopes. The common name refers to the very rough texture of the leaves, which were used by Aborigines as sandpaper. The edible fruits are commonly borne on quite old branches or even directly on the main trunk; this is termed cauliflory.
